Tim, a homeowner in Lincoln, CA, desired a backyard that was both practical and beautiful. The existing yard suffered from failing concrete, poor drainage, unmanaged vegetation, and no unified design linking the ADU, side yards, and primary outdoor living areas. The initial goal was to resolve functional concerns while creating a low-maintenance outdoor space.

After reviewing the comprehensive design-build plan, the homeowner chose to expand the vision into a complete backyard transformation. Over two months, the Rogers Landscape team executed a meticulous project including new composite decking, concrete stepping pads, artificial turf, steel borders, custom screening, LED lighting, and a custom spillway water feature. The result: a fully transformed backyard offering functional pathways, ADU access, privacy, and long-term durability, all enhanced with a contemporary aesthetic.

The client sought a backyard that blended beauty with functionality while accommodating everyday living. The original yard had multiple challenges:

Initially, the plan focused on addressing these key issues. After seeing the proposed design, the client expanded the project to include:

• Precast concrete stepping pads connecting main areas to the ADU
• Artificial turf with steel borders
• 8′ x 14′ Timbertech composite deck
• Horizontal slat planter box and 25 LF tall slat screening
• LED landscape lighting
• Raised spillway water feature
• Extended electrical for the water feature and sauna area
• Premium planting with trees and shrubs

Scope of Services Provided:

• Demolition & Site Preparation: Weed control, debris removal, partial concrete/rock demolition, and site prep for new construction, ensuring proper grading and stability.
• Concrete Stepping Pads: Precast Belgard pads (24″ x 36″) linking the main yard to the ADU.
• Artificial Turf Installation: Excavation, road base, DG compaction, and infill sand for a lush, durable lawn.
• Steel Borders: Installed along turf edges for clean, long-lasting definition.
• Irrigation & Drainage: Drip system for landscape and garden boxes (x2 valves). Drain line installed under decking and turf area, daylighted at slope with four inlets for proper water flow.
• Decking & Hardscape: 8′ x 14′ Timbertech deck with pressure-treated framing and posts. Horizontal slat redwood planter box (36″ tall, 4′ x 12′) and 25 LF horizontal slat screen (8 ft tall) in the side yard.
• LED Lighting & Electrical: Transformer, wiring, and 8 LED fixtures. Extended 110V electrical from the panel to the sauna area (dedicated) and water feature.
• Spillway Water Feature: Raised 36″ wide water feature with backing, basin, and full electrical connections.
• Soil & Planting: Premium planter mix in shrub beds. Plant installation includes 8-5 gallon plants and 12-1 gallon plants.
