Sacramento restaurant patio makeover

Project Description

Hawks Public House, a respected restaurant located near Alhambra Blvd and Stockton Blvd, had long envisioned creating a modern and inviting outdoor dining experience. However, the project faced a significant setback: multiple designers and contractors attempted to secure city approval over several years, yet none succeeded in pushing the plans through. The patio renovation remained stalled due to permitting challenges, compliance issues, and incomplete design revisions.

When the project was taken on, the goal was clear: to resolve the permitting roadblocks, revise the plans to meet all city requirements, and oversee the entire construction. What began as a need for approval and updates ultimately evolved into a complete commercial patio transformation with upgraded hardscaping, custom-built features, enhanced lighting, and a refreshed landscape layout. Over six months, the outdoor area was reimagined into a functional, attractive, and city-compliant dining space tailored for the restaurant’s guests.

Background & Client Vision:

The Hawks family wanted an outdoor patio that reflected the quality and atmosphere of their restaurant. Their existing setup was outdated, underutilized, and restricted by years of halted progress. They needed a team capable of navigating municipal processes, resolving design discrepancies, and overseeing construction.

Initially, the primary objective was to secure full approval from the City of Sacramento. After reviewing the existing plans, several compliance gaps required attention, including structural revisions, irrigation updates, and lighting code requirements. Once the revised plans were approved, the client expanded the vision to include:

  • A new color-infused broom-finish concrete patio
  • A custom water feature with stucco wall, basin, tile, electrical, and scuppers
  • A modern fire feature with a gas line, burner, tempered glass guard, and electric start
  • A CMU stucco wall with a floating redwood bench
  • Custom iron fencing, two gates, and black paint with redwood slats
  • A WUCOLS-approved irrigation system
  • Commercial-grade LED lighting
  • Updated drainage, premium soil, trees, shrubs, and bark installation

Each of these enhancements contributed to a polished, functional outdoor space that aligned with the restaurant’s brand and long-term needs.
